MSM (Methyl sulfonyl methane) is a source of naturally-occurring sulphur and one of the major building blocks of glycosaminoglycans, the key structural components in cartilage, which play an important role in the maintenance of healthy joints.

What is MSM?

MSM or Methyl Sulphonyl Methane is a product of the Earth's sulphur cycle and is naturally present in milk, fruits, vegetables, and meat.  The amount of naturally occuring MSM from these sources is too small to extract for use in dietary supplements.  Therefore, all MSM in supplements must be manufactured. 

Is MSM Natural?

Some DSMO used in the production of MSM is made from raw materials found in pine trees.  No 'extracted' or 'all natural' from of MSM is available commercially.  However, when MSM is manufactured and purified corrctly, it is identical to MSM found in nature. 

Purification is an essential step in the production of MSM.  There are two methods by which MSM is purified, crystallization or distillation. 

OptiMSM™uses distillation for purifying its MSM. 

What is the difference between the two purification methods?

Method 1. Crystallization

MSM purified by crystallization uses a wash-and-centifuge process to separate impurities and by-products introduced during manufacturing.  The purity of MSM is highly dependent on the quality of the raw materials and on the procedures used during manufacturing.  As crystals form, occlusions (pockets) develop that can entrap contaminants present in the solution. 

Method 2. Distillation - OptiMSM™uses distillation for purifying its MSM.

MSM purified by distillation uses heat to separate impurities and by-products of manufacturing based on their unique boiling points.  MSM's boiling point of 478º F (248º C) allows pure MSM to be isolated from solution.  In addition, to a very pure product, distilled MSM has low moisture content, which reduces the risk of microbial contamination and product degradation.  Industry research favours the OptiMSM™distillation method as the preferred purification method.
